Every Child We Reach Generates a Ripple Effect

Ocean Protection
Starts with Children

What is MARES?

MARES is a nonprofit organization based in San Andrés Island that empowers children to become ocean guardians through education, community action, and environmental conservation. Through our Education, Action, and Transformation model, we help build a generation that protects the sea, values its territory, and creates lasting change for the future of the island.

OUR MODEL IS STRUCTURED IN THREE STAGES:

TRANSFORMATION

  • Transform waste into meaning through art
  • Reuse collected materials
  • Create pieces and expressions
  • Understand that harm can be transformed

ACTION

  • Take learning into real experiences (beach clean-ups)
  • Engage directly with their environment
  • Observe, question, and interact
  • Connect knowledge with action

EDUCATION

  • Build understanding, awareness, and emotional connection
  • Learn how the ocean works and why it matters
  • Understand the impact of pollution
  • Begin to see the ocean as part of their identity

HOW WE MEASURE IMPACT

  • What they say: How children talk about the ocean after the experience
  • What they do: Changes in everyday behavior.
  • What they say: How children talk about the ocean after the experience
  • What they influence: Impact on families and community
  • What we capture: Real stories, images and moments of change

THE PROBLEM

The real risk is not pollution,
it is the normalization of it.

It is an ancestral Raizal territory, located within the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve. This archipelago is home to 75% of the country’s coral reefs and more than 2,000 km² of mangroves, seagrasses, and coral ecosystems.

HOW WE MEASURE IMPACT

MARES created and validated a methodology designed to transform how children perceive and connect with the ocean.

ANTES DE MARES
DESPUÉS DE MARES

Our projected impact is to reach over 750 children by the end of 2026, and an estimated reach of more than 6.000 children over the next 5 years.

  • What they say: How children talk about the ocean
  • What they do: Changes in behavior
  • What they influence: Impact on families and community
  • What we capture: Stories, images, and moments of change

We don’t just count children, we document transformation.
